cruisin for roisin

November 3, 2008

Imagine Lisa Stansfield (the voices are shockingly similar), younger, blonder, freakish. Imagine Lisa trading her R&B schlock for pulsing, deep electronics, but still tipping the hat to classic disco. Imagine her clubbing with Leigh Bowery and crying a lot. You'd have Roisin Murphy. And she's damn near perfect.

I often trumpet the next ingénue of dance music. But they never have staying power. Even Robyn, who I crushed on hard earlier this year, eventually lost her shine. Roisin is different. She's got this soul. Infectious soul.

I loved Moloko (download Forever More, right now). Always did, but never obsessed. This album, Overpowered, is genius. Pure genius. And the videos. You'll gag. For days.

Stripped down electronics. Disco's back. Brilliant. Weirder. Bjork's blonde soul-sister has stolen the show, crafting the best dance record, from beginning to end, in the last ten years. Find it. Tell everybody she's your lady.

Steven / RedMonkey:

This makes me soooo happy to read! I am glad you see the vision that is Roisin. I have been smitten... overpowered, if you will... by her. And encourage everyone to give her album a spin. (Check out her videos on YouTube as well too.) Her pairing of fashion and music are extraordinary! Best of all, a long overdue U.S. release of her album is coming (some say early January).
